There is no written record of distillation on the site before this date but the research of a local historian establishes the presence of clandestine distillation nearby at the very beginning of the nineteenth century. Glengoyne remains the only distillery, along with Macallan, to use Golden Promise barley, they uses hot air to dry malt instead of peat smoke. The clear and shiny appearance, as well as the characteristic flavor of Glengoyne single malts are attributed to the absence of peat smoke.
