Domaine Leroy
The great history of the Leroys in Burgundy began in 1868, when François Leroy, winemaker of his state, founded the Leroy trading house. One of his descendants, Henri, bought in 1942 half of the Romanée-Conti vineyard, whose wines were already famous throughout the world, His daughter Lalou Bize-Leroy took over as head of the trading house, and was co-manager of the Romanée-Conti estate from 1974 to 1992.
With the help of Takashimaya, the distributor of the wines of her trading house in Japan, she created the Leroy estate in the Côtes-de-Nuit appellation, buying vines from Domaine Noëllat and Domaine Philippe Rémy in 1988 and 1989. Domaine Leroy has plots in a series of prestigious terroirs such as Chambolle-Musigny, Musigny grand cru, Volnays-Santenots, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Vosnes-Romanée, Richebourg, or Clos-Vougeot, which are entirely worked in biodynamics.
The wines produced by Lalou Bize-Leroy never cease to excite and fascinate. This outstanding taster has one of the most personal visions of all of Burgundy, a unique experience of winemaking, again in compliance with strict principles, such as the non-destemming of grapes. All this has allowed Lalou Bize-Leroy, whose estate is at the head of a unique collection of great terroirs, to produce some of the greatest wines in the world.
The village level wines are, frankly, magnificent. Leroy’s Pommard Les Vignots, shows to grand effect. The Vosne-Romanée Les Genaivrières is superb, while the Chambolle-Musigny Les Fremières is a Burgundy of pure and total seduction. Moving into the 1er Crus, the Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Narbantons is another wine that shows the extra dimension of finesse of the vintage. What a gorgeous wine it is. The pair of Nuits-Saint-Georges, Vignerondes and Boudots, make for a fascinating exploration of terroir. The same is true of the two Vosne 1er Crus, the Brulées and the Beaux Monts, which Chez Leroy emerge from adjacent parcels. Like the village Chambolle, the 1er Cru Les Charmes is magnificent. The Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes is another wine that is especially finessed.
